The 2 biggest inclusions was the inclusion of a rechargable battery pack, and a frontlight screen. It improved on the original Advance in almost every way. The Gameboy Advance SP was an update to the Advance line. The lack of a light, and the vivid color capabilities of the GBA made it hard to play in some conditions. Since GBA games were about half the height of Game Boy games, original games Stuck out about an inch when plugged in.ĭrawbacks to the GBA were the fact that is still took 2 disposable AA batteries (although several recharable battery opions were provided by third parties), the lack of a built in AC adapter port(so an adapter had to be plugged into the battery compartment if you want to play it plugged into the wall), and no light on the screen. The Game Boy Advance maintained the backwards compatability of all Game Boy and Game Boy Color games released by the inclusion of the Game Boy Color processor on the circuit board(GBA games use this processor for the sound card). It had a larger, higher resoluton screen, and for the first time in the Game Boy line, added new buttons, L and R shoulder buttons. It was also the first Game Boy to be designed in a horizontal layout, with the screen between the hands. It was a 32-bit console, slightly more powerful than the 16-bit SNES. The Game Boy Advance was released in 2001, and was a huge leap for the Game Boy line. Power wise, the Color is an 8-bit system comparable to the NES, although slightly more powerful. Wikipedia says that about 1/4 of Game Boy Color games were Black Cartridge games. These were Game Boy Color games that could also work on the original Game Boy in black and white mode. This gave the Color a huge library of games at release, since it could play almost every game already out.Īlso created during the Color era were "Black cartridge" games. Virtually every Game Boy game created was compatable with the Color, and the Color was even able to display the older games in some color, up ot 12 colors from a pre-selected palette at a time. The screen had 56,000 colors in the palette, and could display 56 at a time.Īnother unique feature of the Game Boy color was backwards compatability. It was the first Game Boy to feature a color screen. It came in 5 colors, took 2 AA batteries, and was a bit bigger than the Pocket. Released in 1998, the Game Boy Color was a huge step up for the Game Boy line. the Light included a backlit screen, a first for the Game Boy, something that would not be matched until the Game Boy Micro, and SP revision 2(the original SP had a frontlit screen).īeing only released in Japan, the majority of the mainstream still doesn't even know that it exists, and it is a very rare item outside of Japan. It is nearly identical to the Game Boy pocket, except that it took 2 AA batteries, instead of 2 AAA of the pocket. Game Boy Light is probably the least known member of the Game Boy family. the Game Boy pocket played the exact same as the Game Boy, as the internal hardware was the exact same. However, the biggest change was that it only took 2 AAA batteries, instead of 4 AA's of the original. It featured a True black and white screen, and had a smaller link port(the same one found all the way up to the GBA SP). Released in 1996, the Game Boy pocket was essentially a slimmed down version of the Game Boy. The Game Boy remained unchanged, save for a few limited edition units with colored shells, until 1996 Nintendo wanted an addictive game to attract customers to the Game Boy, and my god, did they ever hit the nail on the head. But back in 1989, it was an amazing peice of technology. Taking 4 AA batteries, with a monochrome screen, and weighing about a metric ton, by today's standards it is a brick. Released in 1989, the Game Boy was the first really sucessful Handheld gaming system. With Nintendo saying recently that they are most likely dis-continuing the gameboy line for good, and myself picking up a famicom micro for teh cheap, this will be a thread to discuss the past and present for the Gameboy, and games.
